Professor Jahar Saha |

Jahar Saha was born on 14th December, 1943 at Kaladi in Matlab (now
in Bangladesh). While his grandparents were in business, his father
was a lawyer who later became a school teacher. His elder brother
was a senior government official and his younger sister is a
professor in a medical college at Kolkata. |

Saha did a four-year professional degree in Statistics (B.Stat.),
Masters in Statistics (M.stat), and a one-year Post-Graduate Diploma
in Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research from the
Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Jahar Saha obtained his Ph.D.
in Operations Research from Case Western Reserve University,
Cleveland, Ohio. His Ph.D. thesis was titled "Some Problems in
Railway Networks" which focused on two kinds of problems in railway
networks: (i) scheduling trains, (ii) selecting an optimal
configuration for railway networks. Many ofthe problems were
structured mathematical programming problems and Saha made attempts
to develop efficient algorithms to the problems. |

Saha started his career as a Trainee Technical Officer of SQC Unit,
Indian Statistical Institute, Mumbai. He also worked as a Junior
System Consultant with a consulting company in Mumbai. |

Since 1975, Saha has been teaching in the Production and
Quantitative Methods Area of the Indian Institute of Management,
Ahmedabad (lIMA). During his tenure at the Institute, he held the
position of Director between 1998 and 2002. He had also taught at
Lake Erie College, USA and had been Visiting Associate Professor at
the University ofNew Brunswick, Canada. |

Professor Saha has been associated with the development of
first-year courses on Mathematics and Statistics for Management
(MSM). He also developed second-year courses on Linear Programming,
Applications of Operations Research, Advanced Topic in Operations
Research and Selected Topics in Operations Research, and Quality
Management. |

Professor Saha held various positions in the Institute such as
Director; Member, Board of Governors; Dean; Chairman,
StaffEvaluation Committee; Chairman, Admissions and Financial Aid
Committee; Warden; Area Chairman, Production and Quantitative
Methods Area; and Coordinator, Management Education Programme. |

Professor Saha's major interest is in resolving complex issues in
management using concepts from mathematics, statistics, and
operations research. |
|

Professor Saha is the co-editor of Studies in Linear Programming
(North-Holland! American Elsevier) and co-author of Capital
Investment Decisions (Macmillan, India), and Tables Professor Jahar
Saha for Capital Investment Decisions (Indian Statistical
Institute). His publications include papers in Sankhya and
Operations Research Quarterly. |

Professor Saha has been involved in a variety of consulting projects
from Gujarat State Transport Corporation, Arvind Mills, USAID, Coca
Cola, NALCO, Coal India, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry, a
large Japanese company, and NAFED. |

Professor. Saha has been a Member, Board of Governors, Indian
Institute of Management, Indore; Institute of Rural Management,
Anand; President's Nominee for Management Schools in Delhi
University and TIT, Bombay; Member, Advisory Committee, American
Institute of Indian Studies, New Delhi; Member, Programmes
Committee, All India Council of Technical Education, New Delhi;
Member, Board of Governors, Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel
Mangement, Gwalior; Member, Advisory Council, MTNL Training
Institute; and Representative, Institutional Member, National
Productivity Council. |

Professor Saha has been a Member, Indo-UK Round Table Committee;
Member, Working Group on Centres of Excellence in Medical and
Scientific Area, Ministry of Health & Public Welfare, Government of
India; Member, Working Group on Public Sector Banks, Ministry of
Finance, Reserve Bank of India; Member, Committee on Establishment
of National Defence University, Ministry of Defence, Government of
India; and Member, Selection Committee of SEBI Chairman & Directors,
Ministry of Finance, Government ofIndia. |

In addition, Professor Saha has been a Member of the Board of
several private organizations; Member of Board of Life Insurance
Corporation of India; and Member of local Board of Bank of America. |
