Application of formal methods in evaluating and prioritizing decision alternatives in the resolution of real life managerial or administrative problems has been of low priority in the Indian context. Some of the key reasons include non availability of trained professionals with an appropriate skill set, lack of appreciation of formal management science methods and imperfect market conditions including low intensity of competition.

In order to promote the use of formal methods in resolving complex managerial situations, Operations Research Society of India Ahmedabad Chapter launched a new initiative in the form of National Conferences on Management Science and Practice. It is expected such Conferences would promote interaction among industry and academia and propagate the use of formal scientific methods in Industry applications.

The first conference of this series was held during March 31 - April 1, 2006 in Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. This conference was a joint effect of ORSI Ahmedabad

Chapter and Production and Quantitative Method Area of IIM Ahmedabad.

This Conference was held in honour of Professor J.L. Saba who superannuated in December 2005 after a long and distinguished service from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Professor Saha was Director of IIM Ahmedabad during 1997-2002.

The Conference consisted of about a dozen invited presentations, 30 contributed papers from academicians and practitioners working in the broad area of applied management science. The conference attracted 80 participants from all over the country.

All the invited contributions and about dozen contributed papers (after review process) have been included in the proceedings of this conference for wider circulation and reference among academic community and practitioners.

We have made a small beginning. We plan to conduct this conference every year. We hope this conference series would evolve as an important national event in the near future, to promote scientific applications in the industrial context.
