Winter School for Operations Research Teachers Summary - Feed back comments of the participants
16 – 25 February, 2008

  Major learnings from the program:

  • Case discussion, analysis, interpretation of solutions; Applications of OR; Importance of Spreadsheet modelling; Problem formulation.

  • Relevance and applicability of OR Models in real life situations; Relevance of OR in other vital functional areas of management; Interesting and exciting way of teaching OR using case studies.

  • How to be a good teacher?; Applications of OR.

  • Importance of scenario building in case discussions.

  • Analysing a problem.

  • No other way to be a good OR teacher than being a good OR Practitioner.

  • Realized the scope, applicability and simplicity of OR.

  We propose to use the learnings from this winter school as follows:

  • Introducing applications of OR in classes;
    Working on Industrial applications and consultation if possible.

  • Teaching OR concepts through caselets and softwares available;
    Generating interest in OR.

  • In making teaching OR more application oriented.

  • Using some cases in OR courses; Promoting OR.

  • Improving course delivery and in future research.

  • Conducting similar programs to promote OR.

  Suggestions about Other topics that should have been covered:

  • Applications of optimization techniques in financial problems.

  • Coverage of OR concepts with Theory of Constraint would have been interesting.

  • Excellent choice of topics – No suggestions.

  • Integer programming, Lagrangian relaxation,Stochastic models, combinatorial optimization.

  • Focus should be more on skills in practicing OR.

  • More on case writing, game theory and other applications of OR.

  • Simulation and role play based sessions.

  Your suggestions to the program team, to improve its quality:

  • Half day of sessions followed by half day preparation.

  • Excellently managed program.

  • Incorporate Case writing in OR in future – that was a major attraction for the programme;Case writing in OR was not given due impoortance

  • Inclusion of more case studies and solutions to some of them.

  • Some sessions were fillers; could have been practical ones;Sessions on marketing, R & D, etc should have been executed by Practitioners;ORSI should follow CS and CA organizations.

  • Can bring in more regour.

  • Duration of the program is too short; May be can be increased to 1 month in future.

  • Sincere thanks to the organisers, especially to Dr. Ravichandran, Dr. Chinnam Reddy and Dr. T. Vasudha, for their efforts in conducting this winter school.

  • Fantastic Programme.
